Minimalist Monochrome Glasshouse is a simple yet very stunning modern house designed by Sarah Waller. The house was built for her and her family after they decided to move in Australia. Sarah’s primary goal was to design and build aesthetically pleasing and at the same time functional, simple home. She found a way to build a perfect residence which exudes the power of simplicity, sophistication and overall atmosphere of mid-century modern architecture.
By placing unadorned windows, along with using natural colour palette and reflective surfaces Sarah created simple modern exterior and combined it with minimalist interior design to accomplish relaxed and decluttered living atmosphere.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Minimalist Monochrome Glasshouse is an excellent example of how to use a simple home design together with a minimalist interior design & monochrome colours in order to achieve a beautiful, carefree and decluttered living space.
Single storey house design
Simplicity has been reached already in initial house planning where it is defined that the residence will be one storey house. Single storey house design is great when one has access to large land, like in this case – 6000 square meters. Furthermore, particularly this modern single story home design is inspired by the post war modern housing architecture; Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House and the Phillip Johnson Glasshouse, according to the architect Sarah.
„The brief was to design a family home that can also function as showcase for my architectural business. My inspiration was the post war housing Architecture: Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House and the Philip Johnson Glasshouse.“
Similarly, the Glass Pavilion designed by Steve Hermann – described as “the most minimalist house designed” has been also inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s Glass House, take a look.
Modern minimalist interior design
Every inch of this modern house is inspired with modern minimalist interior design – from modern black & white kitchen to black & white bathroom. Monochrome colours are frequently used when it comes to minimalist house interior design as they contribute a lot in the process of achieving simple, relaxed atmosphere.
Another example of modern minimalist style can be seen from this apartment with black and white interior design – The “Contemporary Interior Box”, where combination of white & black colours with wood created remarkably distinctive apartment from any other.
Open concept floor plan
Another indispensable characteristic of modern design is open concept floor plan. Not only it creates great connection of all spaces inside the house but it also makes it seem more spacious. In this project we have the example which especially stands out – the open floor plan kitchen surrounded by sliding exterior glass walls and great connection to the living room and rest of the house.
Modern black and white kitchen
Modern black and white kitchen is a great example of how it is possible to design remarkable kitchen while using only 2 contrasting colours – black & white. By doing so one ends up with minimalistic area which not only looks good but it is also functional. In order to shatter a bit black and white colour scheme, Sarah used a large wooden dining table and made it a focal point of the whole kitchen interior. Not to mention it looks perfect on the white kitchen floor.

Black and White Bathroom and Outdoor Bath
Black & white colours were the number 1 choice when it comes to the bathroom as well. In order to pop just a bit of colour, green plants were added. In addition to the black and white bathroom in the house, there is an outdoor bath with an outdoor shower which comes in really handy on properties in areas where the climate is warmer.
Sliding Exterior Glass Walls As An Inevitable Part of Simple House Design
Simple house design is especially expressed thanks to the exterior glass walls. Sliding glass walls are great for many reasons – first, they enable the daylight into the modern interior and second, when open they offer the possibility of connection between interior and exterior.
Swimming Pool Garden Design
Last but not least, probably the most relaxing part of this simple home is its backyard with modern swimming pool deck and spacious grassy garden where one can relax on hammock and admire the palms.
„Taking style cues from the Modernist Palm Springs pools popular during the ’50s, a similar look is evoked with a streamlined resort style linear pool, offset with a chic cabana furnished with casual pieces ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sweeping views.“
